Repair of Infrastructure along Wharf 18 Dredge Pipe @ Turning Basin Terminal

Location: Houston, TX
Project Type: Rehabilitation
Owner:
Port of Houston Authority | Ruth Flores
Engineer:
Freese & Nichols | Cameron Lawrence, PE

Project Scope

The project had two main objectives: First, the installation of a 110 LF 36” steel casing pipe under Port of Houston Railroad Authority and Union Pacific Railroad Tracks. This new section serves as the final leg to the already existing 36” dredge line running from Wharf 18, allowing dredge materials from the Port of Houston Turning Basin to be deposited at the Corp of Engineers landfill off Clinton Drive. Second, during a routine CCTV inspection, a damaged section of the 36” line was identified, requiring a point repair to complete the line to the landfill. This point repair was a time-sensitive "critical path" operation, as existing tracks needed to be taken out of service, removed, and restored within a strict five (5) day window to avoid liquidated damages from halted rail traffic. Boyer successfully completed the project in four (4) days, returning the tracks back to the Port Terminal Railroad Authority ahead of schedule.
